Read the call, remit, eligibility rules, assessment criteria and exclusions before drafting. Write for the funder's priorities rather than retrofitting a finished project.
Make the research question, significance and novelty obvious early. A reviewer should understand the problem, gap, hypothesis and proposed solution within the first page.
Use a small number of clear aims with measurable outputs. Link each aim to methods, deliverables, milestones and decision points.
Explain controls, replicates, statistical approach, sample-size rationale, randomisation/blinding where relevant, inclusion criteria and how data quality will be monitored.
Explain why the model is biologically appropriate and how it improves on existing approaches. Avoid relying on novelty alone.
Strong applications acknowledge what may fail. Pair the main scientific and technical risks with realistic fallback strategies.
Show that the combined expertise, facilities and partnerships are right for the project. Explain what each collaborator contributes rather than listing names.
Make every major cost traceable to the work plan. Explain unusual equipment, specialist services, staff time, access fees and collaboration costs.
Describe who benefits, what will be produced and how outputs will be shared. Include data-management, software, protocols, publications and dissemination where required.
Balance the project with the applicant's development. Make independence, mentorship, training, mobility and future research trajectory visible.
Use short sections, descriptive headings, clear figures and concise language. Define specialist terminology and avoid making reviewers hunt for key information.
Prepare a short explanation of the problem, solution, novelty, risks, team and impact. Practise hostile as well as supportive questions and know the budget and milestones.
